WHAT WEIGHT ROD DO I WANT? Rods are designed to throw certain wt. fly lines. The range varies from “0 wt.” to “14 wt.” wt. Which size rod will be best for you is determined by the type of water you fish, the size and weight of the flies you are using and the size of the fish you are targeting. These are personal preferences.

WHAT LENGHT ROD DO I WANT? The physical conditions often will aide you in making this decision. Small over grown streams lend themselves to shorter rods, while larger water where you do a lot of mending, longer rods can be advantage.

WHAT ACTION DO I WANT THE ROD TO HAVE? Action in the rod describes where the rod flex. A fast or tip flex rod the majority of the bend will be in the upper 1/4, these rods deliver fast line speeds and are great for distance, but require exact timing of your casting stroke. Moderate fast action rod flex in the upper 1/3, deliver fast line speeds and are a little more forgiving. Moderate action rods flex in the upper 1/2 of the rod and are great for those delicate presentations.

IS A 2 PIECE ROD BETTER THAN A MULTI PIECE ROD?  Fly rods today are available from 2 piece to 7piece. Is a 2 piece better than a multi piece rod? Not necessicarly. With today’s ferreling of graphite, other things such as modulus, and taper play a far more important role than the number of sections

MOST MAJOR MANUFATURERS BLANKS ARE AVAILABLE TO THE CUSTOM ROD BUILDER, BUT YOU CAN OFTEN GET MORE FOR YOUR MONEY FROM SMALL CUSTOM BLANK MANUFATURERS NOT AVAILABLE AS FINISHED RODS.
